I am new to Arduino so please give me some advice on this really simple problem. I am currently using an Arduino Mega in a school project to make 4 capacitive sensors which are supposed to receive an input when you touch the sensors, and I have programmed the arduino such that you will light up an LED upon touching the sensors.

Now the problem is after I light up the LEDs the serial data monitor gives me many different numbers when I am touching the sensors. Is it actually possible for me to tweak my program such that outputs of my sensor will show up as a single line of '0' when the sensor is not being touched and '1' when the sensor is being touched? This would really help me in the quantifying of some of the data I would wish to collect from my experiments with the sensors.

Hence it would be really great if I could tweak my code such that the output on the serial monitor would be '0' when there is no output(Not touching sensor) and '1' when there is an output (touching sensor)

It sounds like what you want isn't really "binary", nor the bit-to-characters expansion of the touch readings.

Rather it sounds like what you want to do is to print the character '0' or '1' for the state of each button. You already have the decisioning code for your outputs, so you can simply extend it for the serial prints:

and so on, with the next set having tabs and the last a newline.

Worth noting, intermixing the printing and digital outputs will put some time delay between the outputs (potentially quite a bit if the evaluation gets ahead of the serial buffers), so another option could to do all the outputs and then all the prints, or store the decisions in a bit mask for later printins, etc.

0

capacitiveSensor returns an analog value so you need to set a threshold for the point where 0 (AKA false) becomes 1 (AKA true):

If you don't recognize that syntax, it's the conditional operator but you could just as well use if.
