not a direct answer but the sparkfun hookup guide connects pin 8 (SDCS) to the chip select for the SD card. If this line is floating, I'm not sure of the impact.

Have you put a 4.7kOhm resistor between data pin and Vcc on the dht22? i had problems with a reading until i did. see this HTH

Sometimes my system hangs in the way you describe ("hanging as soon as the Arduino usb cable connected") if I mistakenly connect the +ve and -ve supply lines to an i2c device the wrong way round.
