I want to control my ESP8266 device from my secure website via 2 different ways:

  1. if ESP8266 is connected to internet, commands between website and device will sent over MQTT which as working perfectly as I want to be.
  2. if ESP8266 is disconnected from internet, commands should be handled through HTTP request to local webserver. (Given I'm connected to the same router).

So the website coded this way: if ( there is internet ) { Publish MQTT command } else { Send HTTP request }

When I tested sending HTTP requests: http://192.168.100.100/?led=on I get error message saying Mixed content is blocked given my website is secure while local webserver is not.

Then I tried setting up a secure local webserver on my ESP8266:

  • With Firefox: It's working perfectly.

  • With Chrome:

    GET https://192.168.100.100/?led=off net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID

  • With IPhone Safari: It is not working and I have no mean to debug right now. But I'm suspecting security issues with local webserver.

As I'm targeting IPhone users, and looking for a solution to improve local webserver security or trying another approach.

  • Are you using self-signed certificates?

  • @Majenko Yes it is self signed

  • That's probably your problem then: you don't have a valid CA. You should get a proper certificate. letsencrypt.org do them for free, but I usually use certbot to generate and install them automatically - not sure how you'd get the raw certificate files.

  • The commonly accepted method for this seems to be to either run your own CA and import that into the systems that will access your devices, or manually import and trust each certificate for your devices into the phone/computer that wants to access it. There is no simple way of using a public CA since they generally need authentication against the domain live on the server, which you can't do.

    Well, you can't really use a public CA on internal sites, and you don't want to run your own CA or import certificates into your browsers, so that only leaves ditching SSL. Which is pointless in a closed network anyway.
