I am working on a project and I want to directly power my NodeMCU from VIN. I have found lots of articles and questions talking about different voltages on the VIN pin of the NodeMCU, but almost none talking about max current input.

Now I am absolutely a bit of a Noob, so apologies if this is a stupid question.

Fundamentally I understand that I can wire a 5V supply to the VIN pin, and I have seen plenty of examples of 9V batteries and 12V supplies. I want to use a 5V3A supply and I am concerned that the 3A current may be too high as input and could fry the NodeMCU.

I just want to be sure that all the articles I have been reading are not talking about 5V1A supplies, and then I accidentally fry the NodeMCU :)

  • The answer may hide somewhere in that article, but it talks predominantly about the amperage under load of a max of 800mA. Fundamentally, this is probably a broader electronics question, is the fact that there are 3A available going to fry anything or can the NodeMCU take the amperage that it needs and ignore what it doesn't (feels wrong). – Mick Kerrigan Sep 2 '19 at 7:52

    The only way "3A" can fry the NodeMCU is if you connect something to it that will try and draw too much current through the NodeMCU. Just because you connect a power supply that is capable of delivering 3A doesn't mean it will. It will only deliver what is asked of it. – Majenko Sep 2 '19 at 9:47
