I purchased a coulomb meter recently. Basically, It is an instrument to measure static charge. The display is fixed and there is no way to take data from the instrument. So, I can't take continuous data or if I wanted to take I need to sit and manually do the job. I recently came to know about Arduino microcontroller and few suggested me that it can be used to transfer data. But before investing my time and resources, I wanted to be sure is it really possible to transfer data from a device to your laptop.

It will probably be very difficult to hack into a commercial product that isn't designed from the start to output values in some form. A better question might be "can Arduino be used to build a digital logging capacitance meter?", and the answer to that question is 'Yes' as can be seen by the example in this post ;-)

  • Coulomb is the unit of measure for charge. Capacitors store charge. A one Farad capacitor stores one Coulomb of charge at 1 Volt. Therefore, a capacitance meter is also a Coulomb meter, and vice versa. – user3765883 Jul 7 '19 at 21:57
  • The post, that you linked to, get's the capacitance by applying a known voltage to the capacitor through a known resistor and measuring the time constant. But during this measurement you change the charge of the capacitor, so that doesn't measure an already existing charge. Or do you suggest to discharge the capacitor through an known resistor, measuring the voltage over that time? From your answer that is not clear. – chrisl Jul 8 '19 at 10:08
  • Either way works. I'm not suggesting that particular program or instrument would work for you as shown - just that it should be relatively easy to set up an Arduino-controlled Coulomb meter, using the knowledge that 1 Coulomb equals the charge on a 1F capacitor with a 1V potential difference. Since you want to measure the charge on a device, the discharge technique might work better for you. – user3765883 Jul 9 '19 at 12:46
