This issue has been bugging me for the past few days! I have learned a lot with my Arduino and the Arduino IDE over the past few years and decided to learn how to make faster, leaner code. I want to learn how to use Atmel Studio 7, but have been having a problem with using avrdude as an external tool...

Before using atmel studio, I put the bootloader successfully on a new atmega328P-PU chip using the directions on the arduino website and also successfully put a test sketch on it using the arduino IDE. I then watched and followed this tutorial by Joop B; start watching at 1:27 to the letter, but after successfully building my project files, I am having trouble uploading them! I spent an hour or so searching for the causes and possible solutions to this, but am not much closer.

Here is the command line I put in the command field:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\hardware\tools\avr/bin/avrdude.exe

Here is the arguments string I put in:

-C"C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\hardware\tools\avr/etc/avrdude.conf" -v -v -v -v -patmega328p -carduino -PCOM5 -b115200 -D -Uflash:w:"$(ProjectDir)Debug\$(TargetName).hex":i

Here is the output I got in Atmel Studio during the attempted upload of a test blink program I made (3 rapid blinks, followed by 2 second pause; different from most default blink programs so I know that mine go loaded or not):

avrdude.exe: Version 6.3, compiled on Sep 12 2016 at 17:24:16

System wide configuration file is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\hardware\tools\avr/etc/avrdude.conf"

Using Port : COM5

Using Programmer : arduino

Overriding Baud Rate : 115200

avrdude.exe: Send: 0 [30] [20]

avrdude.exe: Send: 0 [30] [20]

avrdude.exe: Send: 0 [30] [20]

avrdude.exe: ser_recv(): programmer is not responding

avrdude.exe: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

avrdude.exe: stk500_getsync() attempt 1 of 10: not in sync: resp=0xba

avrdude.exe: Send: 0 [30] [20]

avrdude.exe: ser_recv(): programmer is not responding

avrdude.exe: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

avrdude.exe: stk500_getsync() attempt 2 of 10: not in sync: resp=0xba

I am certain that COM5 is correct as I checked in the Arduino IDE and in my windows 8.1 device manager. In reading another article, I heard it mentioned that the version of avrdude might be the reason I am having this problem. That article said that a specific version of avrdude is installed with the arduino IDE. avrdude was installed when I installed my arduino IDE a few years ago.

Please help me with this most infuritating problem!
