There is something wrong with the connection. Can be anything (and more) of:

Hardware problems:

  • Hardware problem on your Lilypad
  • No power on your Lilypad
  • Hardware problem on your computer
  • No power on your computer
  • Wrong USB cable
  • No USB cable
  • Bad USB cable

Software problems:

  • USB Driver problem
  • Wrong driver installed
  • Wrong IDE installed

Solutions:

  • Check USB connections
  • Switch components (like cable, or another Lilypad if you have)
  • Reinstall software/drivers

It could be that your LilyPad does not have a bootloader, that has happened to me before. You can solve that by buying a Programmer that connects to the SCK, MOSI, MISO, Reset, Power, Gnd, burn in a bootloader. Lilypad is likely surface moount and your model may not make those pins accessible, so a surface mount adapter may also be needed: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/atmel-atmega-socket-firmware-flashing-tool.html This connects to your programmer, and the white end is pressed onto the '328P chip.
