I was using an Arduino Uno for a project, when suddenly it stopped allowing me to upload sketches. I kept getting the error message:

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

all in slow succession. I think this has something to do with the fact that my sketch I was working on used pins 0 and 1, but I'm not sure.

So I got a known good Uno, and followed the instructions on this Arduino.SE post, and here's the results I have:

  • Voltage between 5V pin and GND pin is in fact 5V
  • When plugged in or reset, the L LED flashes 3 times quickly
  • When trying to upload a sketch, the L LED flashes 3 times quickly, and the RX light flashes once quickly for each attempt
  • Fails the loopback test, no serial response
  • Atmega_board_detector says that optiboot_atmega328 is present. (Note, I used the 11, 12, 13 pins instead of the 2x3 header, if that makes a difference.)

I'm not sure what the problem could be; the bootloader is apparently present, but sketches won't upload. Any suggestions as to what I should do / what else I should test?

EDIT So when Majenko asked if my board was genuine, I took a closer look, and it turns it that the two boards look a little different. The good board has an extra header that the bad one doesn't. Is there supposed to be one on the bad board?

  • Is this a genuine Arduino? What operating system are you using? Do you still have something connected to pins 0 and 1? – Majenko Sep 6 '17 at 7:59
  • The broken one is genuine, the good one is I think a clone. I'm using Windows 7, and nothing is connected to 0 and 1. – Henry Swanson Sep 6 '17 at 15:16
