Hi I am trying to configure an Atmega328p to run with an 8MHz oscillator in part to reduce power consumption and so I don't need to have level shifters all over my project. I have changed the board.txt file to:

uno.upload.speed=57600
uno.build.f_cpu=8000000L

To halve the upload baud rate and halve the CPU speed for the 8Mhz clock. EDIT and used and uno as an ISP to burn the new boot loader to the Atmega328p

When uploading a sketch to the board I select Arduino Pro Mini as the target device as it has a Atmega328 3.3v with a 8Mhz clock but I get the following error message

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1

Does anyone know a way around this?

  • Changing the value in the file does not change the value in the hardware. – Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams Nov 13 '16 at 15:44
  • sorry I've edited the original question, I have used a ISP to boot load a new configuration to the atmega – hoboBob Nov 13 '16 at 15:49
