I have an application that calls for controlling two stepper motors. One motor does a constant speed scan, while the other would kick in at certain scanning positions of the first motor.

Can this be done with only one motor shield? The motors are relatively large, running on 12V. Thank you!

    Typically you need a dual H bridge per motor, so for most boards you can run only one stepper. "Large" motors may need a more capable driver - you need to specify your current requirement or DC winding resistance. – Chris Stratton Apr 11 '16 at 5:54

But you will need to look at the specs to make sure they fit your needs, the best way to do that it to look at the main chip that is driving the motor and look at what that can do.
