Reading values from SQL arduinoArduino ethernet

I'm just about to do this project where iI will make some lights flash up depending on some values thatsthat are in an sqlSQL database on a server. I have already bought my arduinoArduino and waiting for it to arrive, but. But I've been stuck inat how to read thisthe SQL data from the arduino with it being connectecArduino, connected to ethernet only. 

Is there a libarylibrary where iI can select from the database directly or do I have to make a webserviceweb service, in which iI can make a http request to when needed?

If itsit's a webserviceweb service, can iI be directed to some examples of this being used with arduinoArduino? I've been looking around the past few days but haventhaven't been able to find a decent example.
